June is Men’s Health Awareness Month & 15th-21st June as Men’s Health week, a time to emphasize men’s well-being and create awareness by providing men with powerful tips and information they can utilize to continue making their health a top priority. While men and women are both uniquely different in their own ways.
Men’s Health week 15-21st June
Overall good health relies on screenings and other evaluations with health care providers based on age, diet, and lifestyle choices, including tobacco and alcohol use. There are a few health conditions that men are more susceptible to and men are far more likely than women to go two years or longer without seeing a physician or other health care professional.
Why Men’s Health?
All this emphasis on the health of boys and men – what’s that about? They’re alright, aren’t they? In many cases, the answer is no.
A boy born in Australia in 2010 has a life expectancy of 78.0 years while a baby girl born at the same time could expect to live to 82.3 years old. Right from the start, boys suffer more illness, more accidents and die earlier than their female counterparts.
Men take their own lives at four times the rate of women (that’s five men a day, on average). Accidents, cancer and heart disease all account for the majority of male deaths.
The above figures are taken from the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Furthermore, there are specific populations of marginalised men for whom the health status is far worse.
Our marganilised groups here in Australia include Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men, refugees, men in prison or newly released from prison and low socioeconomic men.
Men’s Health Week has a direct focus on the health impacts of men’s and boys’ environments.
It serves to ask two questions:
- What factors in men’s and boy’s environments contribute to the status of male health as indicated in the table above?
- How can we turn that around and create positive environments in men’s and boy’s lives?

It is a World Wide focus
Around the World June is Men’s Health Month, each Country has their own specific wee during the month of June to focus on Men’s Health.

According to the U.S. National Institute of Health, when compared to women, men are more likely to:
- Smoke and drink
- Put off regular checkups and medical care
- Make unhealthy or risky choices

Men’s Health Information and Resource Centre, MHIRC has been based at Western Sydney University, Hawkesbury campus, since our foundation in 1999.
MHIRC website has information, research, publications as well as programs they are running. Information is knowledge and knowledge is a powerful tool in taking control of Men’s Health and their overall longevity.
